The Government has named its preferred candidate to take over from present NHS England chairman Sir Malcolm Grant.

Lord David Prior, former health minister in the Conservative Government between 2015 and 2017, joins the NHS during the preparations for the long-term plan, which will be supported by an extra £20.5bn a year by 2023/24.

Lord Prior already covered high-level leadership roles in the healthcare domain, as the chairman of the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and Norfolk, Norwich University NHS Foundation Trust.

At present, he is the chairman at University College London Hospital NHS Trust.

The Health and Social Care committee will question Lord Prior on Monday, 10 September. Among other questions, he will be asked to explain how he would approach the recent funding settlement announced by the Prime Minister and the impact of Brexit on the healthcare sector if his appointment is confirmed.

Health and Social Care secretary Matt Hancock said: ‘Lord Prior brings huge experience to this important role where he will help deliver the long-term plan for the NHS.

‘I look forward to working with Lord Prior closely and want to thank the outgoing Sir Malcolm Grant for his service to the role and the NHS.’
