A review into an Essex Hospital accused of trying to cover up its mortality rates began today.
Basildon Hopsital had 1,943 deaths between July 2011 and June 2012. The hospital was visited as part of the Keogh Review into potential failings at 14 hospital trusts.
Basildon Hospital Chief Executive Clare Panniker said: "A great deal of work has already taken place and more is under way to achieve consistently high standards of care, including the introduction of a trust-wide quality and safety turnaround programme."
The inspection of the hospital was led by David Levy, regional NHS director.
Close to 200 families have taken legal action against the hospital so far, with campaigners fight for improvements.
Dan Chapple founded campaign group Cure the NHS Basildon in March after the death from a brain haemorrhage of his mother, whom he says was not diagnosed in time.
He told the BBC, "There are good doctors in that hospital."
"I am not trying to villainise everyone at the hospital, I am trying to bring out the people who are bad and hopefully put an end to it."
Professor Sir Bruce Keogh, NHS medical director, is following up on allegations of poor care and high mortality rates following the events at Mid Staffordshire Hospital.
Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals Trust denies covering up its death rates.
