A £60 million improvement fund to improve hospice care and support end-of-life care at home has been launched.
The government fund aims to ensure that people receive the “best possible care” irrespective of where they choose to be cared for.
More than 175 hospices will receive money to update and refurbish day-therapy facilities, provide transport services and improve gardens so that patients can spend more time outdoors.
‘Compassion and kindness’
Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said: "This extra funding will help bring hospices up to date, so staff and volunteers can work in modern environments, helping them continue to provide wonderful support with compassion and kindness.
"And patients will see a huge difference in their surroundings that play a considerable part in helping them psychologically and physically."
Care and Support Minister Norman Lamb believes the fund will help hospices provide “dignified, compassionate, high quality care”.
He said: "Every one of us has the right to the best quality of care at the end of our lives – hospices play an integral role in helping to deliver this.”
The fund builds upon a £40 million scheme run in 2010/2011, and applies to both hospices for children and adults.
