A GP commissioning enthusiast and DH advisor has been awarded an OBE for his services to general practice by the Queen in the New Year's Honours list.
Dr James Kingsland, a Wallasey GP for 23 years and valued member of GP Business' editorial board, has been a keen supporter of both practice-based commissioning (PBC) and GP commissioning throughout his career – with his practice becoming the first PBC organisation in England.

Dr James Kingsland, a Wallasey GP for 23 years and valued member of GP Business' editorial board, has been a keen supporter of both practice-based commissioning (PBC) and GP commissioning throughout his career – with his practice becoming the first PBC organisation in England.
Since 1999, Dr Kingsland has held multiple advisory roles for the DH in helping it develop and implement initiatives such as PMS policy and Walk-in Centres.
His current post sees him advise the government on the transition to GP commissioning as the national clinical lead with the NHS Clinical Commissioning Community.
While Dr Kingsland appears to relish juggling his multiple roles, including the Presidency of the National Association for Primary Care (NAPC), he is clearly overjoyed at being recognised for his work as a GP.
"I am really pleased that I received the honour for services to general practice as opposed to my department of health work as I have always been a GP first," he told GPB.
"It's fantastic to be recognised as a clinician."
Dr Kingsland has also served as an advisor to the former Health Minister Lord Darzi for the Next Stage Review of Primary and Community Care and is now part of the review's Clinical Advisor Group.
He has also been a GP trainer for 18 years and is a former member of the Mersey Regional GP Education Board.
