Trusts in Greater Manchester have agreed to host 20 doctors from Apollo Hospitals in India, following an agreement with Health Education England last year.

Our sister publication Pulse reported in April last year that HEE signed a ‘memorandum of understanding’ with Apollo Hospitals, a hospital chain in India, to begin a ‘mutual exchange of clinical staff’.
The doctors are expected to arrive this year and will be placed in emergency departments for up to three years while they complete their training, before they return to India.
While it was reported that the agreement between HEE and the hospital chain would involve the recruitment of up to 400 GPs to England, HEE said the discussions are still in ‘very early days’.
Professor Ged Byrne, regional director of education and quality for HEE North, said: ‘These conversations with Apollo and Greater Manchester Health & Social Care Partnership are still at a very early stage and build on the MoU that exists between Health Education England and Apollo.
‘They are focussed around how we can work together in the future to train the future healthcare workforce.’
He added that the scheme ‘benefits both the UK as it helps to fill an immediate need and the doctors themselves who gain access to high quality training and a unique skills set’.
